Hugh has been acting as a Professional Trustee since 2017 and is based near York.

Prior to working in trusteeship, he was a consulting actuary, and has over 30 years’ experience helping guide trustee boards.

He works in all capacities – trustee board member, Chair and sole trustee – on schemes ranging from £10m to £350m. His clients cover private, public and not for profit sectors and include organisations within manufacturing, construction and Higher Education sectors. Employers include UK plcs, private businesses and family firms, as well as parent organisations in Germany, the US and Japan.

While the majority of his work has been directed towards helping the trustees’ decision making and the scheme sponsor’s knowledge and understanding, he also has experience in working with the Pensions Regulator. This has covered challenging actuarial valuation situations as well as clearance applications for leveraged corporate transactions.

Hugh’s particular specialism is around building a framework for sound financial management of the pension scheme, and managing the process through to the long run position. He has detailed experience in setting appropriate long term investment strategies, and has also successfully led schemes through insurance buy ins and full scheme buy out.
