Hugh joined Cadbury Schweppes plc in 1969 as the No. 2 in the Pensions Department. He became Pension Fund Manager 10 years later, a position he retained until his retirement in 1997. His particular interest was investment performance and managing relationships with the six investment managers for the £1.2 billion scheme. In 1985 he led the introduction of private equity investment, building a portfolio of some £40 million across eight venture fund managers.
Following his retirement he joined BESTrustees as an Associate. He is a trustee for a number of schemes with assets ranging from £2 million to £350 million.
A chartered accountant and a Fellow of the Pensions Management Institute (PMI), Hugh has served on the Council of PMI, being Hon. Treasurer for two years. He also served for many years on the committee of Pensions Research Accountants Group (PRAG), being Secretary and then Chairman for two years. In 1987 he chaired a PRAG working party, which produced the first definitive recommendations for the accounts of pension schemes - 'Pension Scheme Annual Reports'. He has also sat on a number of committees for the NAPF and spoken at various courses and conferences. He was a committee member of IPTG on its inception for two years.
