The team : Alan Murphy

Alan Murphy has been a senior pensions manager for over 27 years.  In 1980, he was appointed as Group Pensions Manager at the Halifax Building Society.  He developed the Group Pensions Department progressively over 19 years and was eventually responsible for a final salary pension scheme with assets of £2bn and nearly 40,000 members.

In 1999, Alan became Head of Pensions at the Co-operative Group and was until recently Director of Group Pensions with responsibilities for a number of schemes with assets totalling £6bn and over 110,000 members.  He has a wide-range of experience covering all aspects of pensions management.

He has acted as Secretary to a number of different schemes over the years.

Under Alan’s leadership, the Co-operative Group Pensions Team became recognised as a leader in in-house pensions management achieving consistent first class audit results and winning 15 industry awards in the last few years.

As the UK pensions environment is becoming more complex, Alan believes that scheme governance, member communications, benefit management and appropriate investment strategies are key areas for Trustees and Scheme administrators to focus on in the best interests of members and scheme sponsors.

Alan joined BESTrustees as an Associate on 1st August 2008.
